Jobs to do in the garden this month…
Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials
Clean out cold frames, tools, pots, water butts and greenhouses
Plant summer-flowering bulbs
Start off dahlia tubers in pots or trays of damp peat-free compost
Tie-in rambling and climbing roses
Prune Buddleja to a low framework of stems
Mow the lawn on dry days
Dig in a layer of compost or manure and work in a slow release fertiliser such as comfrey pellets, chicken manure or fish blood and bone
Put out wild birdfood for hungry birds
Top-dress permanent pot plants to refresh the compost
Cut back ornamental grasses before growth begins
Weeds will have started to grow, so keep removing them whenever you can
Lift forget-me-nots to prevent heavy self-seeding and reduce spreading
